Pokello, Elikem, Others Storm 2013 Glitz Africa Fashion Week

Three former Big Brother Africa representatives, Zimbabwean Pokello Nare, Ghanaian Elikem
Kumordzi and Zimbabwean Vimbai Mutinhiri took to the runway on thursday night, to mark the official opening

of the 2013 Glitz Africa Fashion Week (GAFW). The three, are among five former housemates of the reality show, who are modeling at this year's five-day fashion extravaganza, which kicked off November 7, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The Fashion Week, which made its debut last year, provides a unique platform for the African fashion industry to showcase talent, network and celebrate diversities.

On the first night, ten designers - including Sarah Christain, Modella B, mSimps, N'Kya, Black Pepper, Ajepomaa Designs, and Mai Atafo Inspired - had their designs on display. There was a special Vlisco Show, which saw models hit the runway with impressive designs form Vlisco.

Big Brother Africa (The Chase) lovebirds designer Elikem and Pokello got the crowd cheering when the later joined models to catwalk designs by the former. After the catwalk, the pair joined hands to take a final walk on stage to the delight of many.

Zimbabwean representative in Big Brother Africa (Amplified) Vimbai and bubby fashion critic, Sandra Ankobiah also took to the runway to model designs by Nigerian designer Mai Atafo. The Nigerian wowed the crowd with his wedding designs.

Vimbai told journalists in an interview that this is her first Fashion Week in Ghana and "before coming, to be honest, I didn't know what to expect. I had seen this stuff online and it looked really gorgeous and glamorous so I was expecting a very good/quality production and exciting African fashion."

The first day, she noted, really lived up to expectation and she enjoyed it.

Sandra Ankobiah, host of Fashion 101, told journalists that after a decade break from modeling, she made a comeback last year and she is happy to be back on the Glitz fashion stage this year.

She noted that in spite of the slight hitches on the first day, she was impressed and hopes the momentum will get bigger by the day.

"I am really impressed with everything I have seen here", Sandra Ankobiah stressed.

This year's event, which is scheduled to end on November 10, 2013, will feature 15 runway shows, seminars, fashion sales and exhibitions with over 70 international models in attendance.

50 designers; 28 from Ghana, 15 from Nigeria with the rest coming from the rest of the world, have registered to showcase their fashion wares.

Apart from Vimbai, Elikem and Pokello, other housemates including Zainab Sheriff and Babalwa Mneno (Barbs) are also expected to grace the event.
